Abstract/NotesThis monograph aims to elucidate the geological structure of the continental Cenozoic deposits of Rudny Altai, a territory located at the junction of three provinces that developed quite differently during the Cenozoic: the Kazakh Uplands, the Kulunda Depression, and the Altai Mountains. Given this location, the paper compares the stratigraphic scheme developed for the Cenozoic deposits of Rudny Altai with those of these regions, as well as more remote areas of Kazakhstan. Along with the stratigraphy of Cenozoic deposits in the described territory and adjacent regions, the monograph examines generations of weathering crusts of various ages, corresponding to the main stages of climatic evolution in the Oligocene-Pliocene period of geological history. It describes Oligocene and Paleogene formations corresponding to stages of tectonic and climatic change, and elucidates the role of transit valleys as transport routes for coarse-grained material from the Altai orogenic region during the Upper Oligocene, Neogene, and Pleistocene. The studied structural features of Cenozoic deposits are of great importance for geological mapping of these territories, as well as for identifying mineral resources, addressing issues related to the construction of hydroelectric and industrial facilities, draining ore fields, and prospecting for industrial and potable groundwater.
Despite nearly two centuries of geological research in Rudny Altai, only a few publications are entirely devoted to Cenozoic deposits and the history of the most recent geological periods in this region. In most cases, scattered information on the Cenozoic of Rudny Altai is contained in works devoted to other topics.
