Abstract/Notes | Vietnam, with an area of 335 000 km2, occupies the eastern side of the Indochinese peninsula (fig. 1). It is formed of a narrow (locally only 40-70 km) band of land, extending over 1 500 km along the Chinese sea. Most of the northern Vietnam (Tonkin) and the centre of the country (Annam) are mountainous, reaching 3 142 m in the Fan Si Pan massif, near the Chinese border. The climate is tropical, humid. Infrastructures in Vietnam remain poor. Some 70% of the country's fast-growing population of 68 millions are engaged in agriculture. Rice is the main staple, produced principally in the vast deltas of the Mekong and Red rivers. The country is well endowed with mineral resources, located mostly in the north. The present mineral production includes various minerals (coal, phosphate, cement, iron ores, chromite, gold, tin, kaolin, etc.) and oil. However, in comparison with the country's mineral wealth, the mining sector is underdeveloped. This article presents a brief overview of the main mineral resources of Vietnam and their potential, as well as an outline of the country's geology. |
