Description | The collection currently contains over 35,000 registered specimens of minerals, rocks, meteorites and tektites from all over the world, with the oldest specimens traced to 1865. The strengths of this collection are undoubtedly the fine suites of specimens from South Australian localities. |
Mineral display arrangement | Chemical,Regional,Aesthetic,Other South Australia is famous for its copper mines and these are well represented in the collection. There are also collections from various other localities such as Iron, Monarch, S.A and Broken Hill N.S.W,. The galleries also have minerals arranged in chemical groups and another illustrates colour in minerals .Some large meteorite specimens are also exhibited in the gallery. |
Specific regional collections/experience | Historic early South Australian copper mines, Olympic Dam Copper-gold-uranium deposit, the Precambrian iron formations of the Middleback Ranges, a particularly fine assortment of quartz specimens from the White Rock Quarry in the Mount Lofty Ranges, a fine collection of Broken Hill N.S.W minerals. |
