Calcium larsenite was named by Charles Palache, Lawson Bauer, and Harry Berman in 1928 in honor of Esper S. Larsen I and at the time believed to be the calcium analog of larsenite. After calcium larsenite was recognized as not being a true analog of larsenite, Paul Brian Moore and Paul Ribbe renamed this mineral esperite in 1965, also in honor of Esper S. Larsen I.
