Name introduced in 1820 by Jöns Jakob Berzelius for a blue, Cu-bearing variety of vesuvianite from Kleppan, Sauland, Norway. Named after the Latin cuprum, copper, alluding to the copper content. The copper content was detected with a blowpipe.
