Named in 1917 by Esper S. Larsen I in honor of Arthur Starr Eakle [July 27, 1862 Washington, DC, USA - July 5, 1931 Honolulu, Hawai'i, USA], professor of mineralogy at University of California, Berkeley, Eakle studied the contact metamorphism of Crestmore, California. Eakle also named erionite, esmeraldaite, palacheite, neocolemanite, probertite, and vonsenite.
