Nov 2023Re: Minerals in ArtReply from Mark Mauthner in Improving Mindat.org.
Hi Jolyon,As curator of this year's Munich Show special exhibit, I would love to see a mineral art gallery online (actually, I have stated before, elsewhere I would love to see a brick-and-mortar gallery somewhere...Tucson??).As for what should be included?  Well, the guideline for this year's ...
Apr 2022Re: Yukon Phosphate Update 2020Reply from Mark Mauthner to an article.
Hi Richard,I was just looking through the article. I am glad someone has made this update. It certainly was due.I have a question and a couple of corrections, though, if I may. This may be something completely obvious to most, but I am in the dark. What is the E-Minerals database you refer to? You ...

Fair enough. Thanks all.

Thanks, Uwe!
Nov 2021Re: Jamesonite?Reply from Mark Mauthner in Photos.
However...now the photo seems to be missing...???
Nov 2021Re: Jamesonite?Reply from Mark Mauthner in Photos.
I have corrected the ID method in the entry. My apologies. I could swear I did that but obviously not correctly.  I just noticed that one can add the actual analysis...I'll have to do that later. And speaking of jamesonite...the "jamesonite" I had from Mt. Washington turned out to be ...
Nov 2021Re: Jamesonite?Reply from Mark Mauthner in Photos.
The specimen was originally labeled "stibnite." Dan Topa of the Natural History Museum - Vienna and I had a little project with feather ores after unexpectedly discovering owyheeite in a sample  from another locality. We then checked other such samples from various locales in BC and ...
Aug 2021Re: Cawston, Keremeos, Similkameen Mining Division, British Columbia, CanadaReply from Mark Mauthner in Localities.
As for the minerals, I can add the following:The Sutton-Thompson collection at UBC has the following:Cat 1076 (Horn Silver Mine): Galena, with sphalerite, pyrite, laumontite and chalcopyriteCat 1261 (Horn Silver Mine): Silver, with acanthite, galena, pyrite, bornite, tetrahedrite, quartzCat 1267 ...
Aug 2021Re: Cawston, Keremeos, Similkameen Mining Division, British Columbia, CanadaReply from Mark Mauthner in Localities.
Sorry, Uwe. Just realized the coordinates and the BC Minfile references are already there. My recommendation on the locality name stands, though.
Aug 2021Re: Cawston, Keremeos, Similkameen Mining Division, British Columbia, CanadaReply from Mark Mauthner in Localities.
Coordinates for the property are:Latitude 049º 03' 25'' Longitude 119º 41' 24''
Aug 2021Re: Cawston, Keremeos, Similkameen Mining Division, British Columbia, CanadaReply from Mark Mauthner in Localities.
Cawston and Keremeos are both settlements: Keremeos being somewhat more of a center (as an incorporated "village") and Cawston as an "unincorporated community just east of Keremeos). BC-EMPR documents generally refer to the mining property's location relative to Keremeos because of Keremeos' ...
Jun 202015 imagesRe: Unusual use of mineral.Reply from Mark Mauthner in General.
Hi Bob,In cooperation with a scientist at the UBC Museum of Anthropology, I produced a display  at the Pacific Mineral Museum explaining the mineral pigments used to decorated a Haida frog bowl. It was determined that the red colour came from cinnabar (yes, the bowl was used ceremonially for ...

Hi Paul,Metadata that should be in the photo file:Tourmaline glasses. Wire-wrapping design by Naomi Hinds. John White collection; Mark Mauthner photo.Cool to see this circulating around. Makes me wonder how and where.Cheers,Mark Mauthner
Mar 2016Re: Rock CurrierReply from Mark Mauthner in General.
Very sad news, indeed. A man worthy of great tribute. RIP, Rock. Mark
Oct 2015Re: Looking for free mineral specimensReply from Mark Mauthner in Mineral Exchanges.
What Alex is doing is nothing new... Back in the days before internet, (heck, before personal computers) I had an exercise in school to write letters (grade 6, I think)...so I wrote letters for real. I wrote to mines stating that I wanted to be a geologist and was trying to build up a study ...
Jan 2015Re: What's new on our 21st anniversary?Reply from Mark Mauthner to an article.
Nice, Jolyon! I like that the copyright information floats on the image no matter how far in one zooms. See you in Tucson. Mark
Jul 2013Re: Semantics...or a real Pet Peeve?Reply from Mark Mauthner in General.
I was always under the impression from having read a few older texts that selenite referred to cleavable masses, alabaster to fine-grained masses, and satin spar to fibrous masses...regardless of color in any case. Since well developed crystals show cleavage, the selenite term was uselessly ...
Jan 2013Re: Mineral Identification Request - Rapid Creek, Dawson Mining District, Yukon Territory, CanadaReply from Mark Mauthner in Identity Help.
Most definitely siderite. Siderite occurs in several habits, corroded or not, at Rapid Creek; it is one of the more interesting species at the locality in that regard (variety of habits). I have several self-collected specimens exhibiting exactly the habit shown in your photographs.
Sep 2018346 imagesRe: Only from Canada, eh?Reply from Mark Mauthner in General.
Just got back from dinner with friends...and on the way to the car I realized that I forgot the photo caption!! Sorry about that... The information: Cobaltite, actinolite, chalcopyrite, gold on magnetite; 12 cm tall. Merry Widow Mine, Port McNeill, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. ...
Sep 2018346 imagesRe: Only from Canada, eh?Reply from Mark Mauthner in General.
Hi All, Don't get on the social side of the web too often but I just went through this whole thread (it was the Red Rose reference, Maggie ;-) ). Wow! What a great bunch of specimens! It was a pleasant surprise to see among them some "old specimen friends"...and some of my photos. ...
Sep 2012Re: Arbitrary Deletion of PhotoReply from Mark Mauthner in Identity Help.
Rudy, I was thinking pretty much along the lines of what John Stolz mentioned; that the ink and appearance of the writing on the note is likely to be that of a ball-point pen (which, according to the history I have read, was invented in the late 1930s, introduced to the Argentine market in the ...
Sep 2012Re: Mineralogy and Museums 7 - Conference in DresdenReply from Mark Mauthner in Minerals and Museums.
Hi Roy, I tried downloading your poster but ended up with a "forum.php" file, twice. Would love to see the poster. :-) Mark
Mar 2012Re: Jolyon & Kate marriage!Reply from Mark Mauthner in General.
Hey, congratulations to you both! All the best for this special day and those that follow! Mark
Apr 2011Re: Random thoughts: ubiquitous mineralsReply from Mark Mauthner in General.
1) It would help if qualifying information would be required with any entry for a species at a given locality. The possibility exists but that data is by far most often not given. So many entries merely say that a species/variety/group simply occurs at the locality. Would it not be more valuable ...
Feb 2014Re: Those fake alphabet agate cabsReply from Mark Mauthner in General.
I have seen a few of these sets, but in the one I was able to inspect closely, the agates appeared to have a thin "carnelian" band at the surface that was cleverly carved into. If one looks at the surface of these (at least the one I looked at, which when I last saw it was in the Houston Museum's ...
Jan 2009Re: Country/Region with Greatest Unexplored Mineralogical PotentialReply from Mark Mauthner in General.
Hi All, I think the thread finally got to the key point. Rob, you are quite right...areas where material is being hand mined or at least where labor (sorry Rob, "labour") is underpaid to the point that even illicit "specimen mining" is worth the risk are going to be the big producers in the next ...
Nov 2014Re: Synthetic Malachite?Reply from Mark Mauthner in Fakes & Frauds.
Hi, We have synthetic malachite in our (GIA) collection that I still find hard to believe are synthetic. They look like typical botryoidal malachite from the Dem. Rep. of Congo! I have yet to find out more about their origin and nature, but I shall endeavor to do so because of this ...
Jul 2008Re: internet purchasingReply from Mark Mauthner in General.
Well said, Alfredo. My limited experience tells me that I see high prices in every kind of venue; low prices too. I was taught that for a given price for a given specimen one can generally, given time, find someone willing to pay 3 times the price, and someone who would not pay a third of it. The ...
Mar 2013Re: Prasiolite green amethystReply from Mark Mauthner in General.
I am somewhat familiar with the green quartz gem that is pictured in the G&G article having held it in my hand (and exhibited it at the Denver and Tucson shows). It is now in the Houston Museum of Natural Science and, before that, was in the Jim Houran collection. It is by all accounts natural ...
Dec 2006Re: Muscovite var. Ball-Peen MicaReply from Mark Mauthner in General.
Just a thought, but one might look up references to "plumose" mica...I have seen (and collected) examples that seem to cover the range from "ball-peen" to "plumose" mica...muscovite, lithian muscovite and lepidolite. Mark

Jan 2008Re: Notes for AuthorsReply from Mark Mauthner in Improving Mindat.org.
A guide for authors is being assembled as we speak (write)...should have it up within a week (after approval from the MinDat heirarchy) :-)
Jan 2006Re: Adding localities - adviceReply from Mark Mauthner in General.
I agree with Rock...localities need to be explicit in what they are. If we do not use "Mountain, Valley, City, etc" then contributors might want to at least put some meaningful description in the Comments box. e.g. for "British Columbia" = "One of 10 provinces in Canada." This is especially ...
Feb 2006Re: Tucson 2006 - Arranging Meetups!Reply from Mark Mauthner in General.
I shall be arriving in Tucson on Feb 2nd...driving straight thru from Houston! Fun stuff... Look forward to seeing/meeting you all
