Feb 2015Re: Aquamarine PreparationReply from Keith Hilbert in Techniques for Collectors.I'm no expert but I do a lot of rock cutting, trimming etc. The problem with cutting is the heat transferred to the stone. It changes the physical characteristics most stones. I flintknap arrowheads and when I slab obsidian its harder to flake.

He suggested using phosphoric acid then going to the other end by using hydrogen peroxide. I never tried it. I use Rust Remover by Whink. Its a low amount of Hydrofluoric acid.(2%). CFR Statutes state that any rocks moved from their original location may be mined under the Placer Claim. This includes tailings. You are not however, allowed to remove anything from the lode source.
