Fakes & FraudsQuestionable listings on ebay

21st Mar 2008 13:52 UTCMark Gottlieb

Check out these listings on ebay:

Item 310033500644 - "Danburite from Danbury, CT" - NOT?

Item 310033501377 - "Rare Smithsonite" - Looks like prehnite?

Is it just me or are these listing totally off the mark?

No, both of these are bogus. Mexican (or Bolivian?) Danburite, and Prehnite.

Especially that danburite alleged to be from the type locality. Danburite from Danbury, Connecticut is ultra rare and aesthetically challenged - typically small pale brownish patches embedded in rock!

Few years ago there was a guy selling (on Ebay) a Calcite from Murcia, Spain, I think...

Well, this guy wanted to tell the whole calcite's history and, starting with the name, he said something like that:

"Calcite is a calcium carbonate named after the calc-alkaline rocks where it's often found"

I swear I was laughting so loud...

I am very surprised about the white/clear danburite being passed off as being from Danbury,CT. Usually the brownish crystals from Russell, NY are the ones being sold as being from the original find. I saw an authentic Danbury specimen in the Peabody Museum collection, a few years ago. It had no crystal faces at all.
