Improving Mindat.orgComplicated duplicate MinIDs

24th Apr 2024 01:37 UTCEd Clopton 🌟 Expert

Three photos depicting the same specimens (sort of) have three different MinIDs.  Photo 225717 depicts a pair of gypsum crystals from Mahoning County, Ohio with MinID 3QV-583.  Photo 1221917 depicts one of the same crystals with MinID 2TK-KA4, and photo 1221918 depicts the other crystal with MinID 12219189.  The latter two photos are more recent and higher resolution than the earlier photo and contain considerable background info in their captions.

This isn't the usual case of two photos of the same specimen with different MinIDs that can be merged.  Is it something that can or should be fixed?  I don't have an opinion, I just noticed the situation and thought I would mention it in case it matters to someone.

The gypsum specimens that Ed is referring are mine ( https://www.mindat.org/photo-1221917.html and https://www.mindat.org/photo-1221918.html ). The reason why the MinID's are separate is because they each have their own catalog number (JKB3117 and JKB3118) . As far as I know I've created a unique situation here, because normally two specimens don't share one MinID and Chris' photo was taken before the MinID system was created.

If there is only the one specimen - there should only be one minId no matter how many photos of the mineral specimen, wide angle, close ups -even of different minerals on the same rock.
Your mineral catalogue is your domain so that is not affected.

Nothing unusual in specimens having multiple minIDs - we simply merge them so that there is only the one.

Should your specimen go to someone else a sole minID would go with it.

In this case I would change the original photo with 2 crystals to the minID of the larger of the other photos - so merge THAT minID into the minID of the larger single crystal
