White, slightly sugary, semi-vitreous, and translucent. Does NOT react with 10% HCL, even after scratching even though I wanted it to. 2.5-3.0 mohs. 2.74 specific gravity. Does not fluoresce.

Questions Answered
Can it scratch glass? : No
Can you scratch it with your fingernail? : No
Is it light/heavy for the size? : Normal

Have you checked your acid?

14th Apr 2024 15:22 UTCjames William hall

Yes, I checked the acid and it it still potent. I just checked it again against calcite and it fizzed happily. Double checked hardness too. I purchased an Eissco Moh''s hardness kit to back up my Deluxe picks. This is the only rock I found that day that I'm having problems with.

Thank you!

Going through the extensive mineral list, what do you think is the best candidate?

And on what property did you distinguish it from marble in the field? What was different?

15th Apr 2024 01:16 UTCjames William hall

I understood marble to be opaque and never thought to compare it to my rock--but now that you said marble, well, ...

Marble it most likely is. I just googled marble and found that some say it is translucent to about 1". Thank you for your help.

Well, calcite marble will fizz.

15th Apr 2024 13:23 UTCjames William hall

Yes, the fizz problem remains for marble. I will try hot 10% HCL on it as Hendrik and Franz suggest.

Might it be magnesite?  Have you tried hot acid?

15th Apr 2024 06:48 UTCFranz Bernhard Expert

This should be tried, indeed! Magnesite is a possibility.

15th Apr 2024 19:16 UTCjames William hall

Hendrik and Franz, It fizzed! Hot acid did the job. Do you think Marble or Magnesite?

16th Apr 2024 09:25 UTCFranz Bernhard Expert

Magnesite marble or dolomite marble.
Dolomite is already excluded?

16th Apr 2024 21:19 UTCHendrik G. van Oss

I suggested magnesite because, in the original query, it was stated that (cold) 10% HCl had failed to elicit a reaction even where the specimen had been scratched--which I equated to crushing.  Dolomite when crushed ought to react with cold acid.  If, instead, the scratch was wiped clean (removing powdered material), then it merely presented a fresh surface, and such for dolomite would not be expected to react to the cold acid.  So, dolomite remains a possibility if nothing was powdered during the cold acid test.  Hot acid, of course, conquers all.  I have not visited the quarry and so don't know the habit of magnesite (listed) there.

I would have suggested marble due to its "sugary" appearance, but of course hard from a photo

May be a colorless piece of antigorite variety bowenite. I'd be very surprised if magnesite occurs there as a rock-forming mineral.
