Photoswhere is the pieczkaite?

25th Feb 2024 00:36 UTCJason B. Smith Expert

Just curious if there is more to this thin section than we are seeing?

The grain that is presumably pieczkaite shows clear Ca dominance and is probably Mn rich chlorapatite if anything. Is there missing information?

Following article has the image explained in context, probably would have been a better idea if the photo description used more parts of that article where it mentions pieczkaite

Yeah I don't see anything in this image that cooresponds to the mineral, nor does the description caption in the article explain where the mineral is in the image. I think some more context is needed.

Hi Jason:

This is my post. The photograph was taken from an article on the Mn apatite at the # 22 Dyke before the characterization of Pieczkaite. The author called what is now characterized as Pieczkaite as Mn apatite. The phase in the upper right corner of the photograph has the chemistry of Pieczkaite.

None of the three phases shown on the image with arrows and accompanying data are pieczkaite, as all of them have Ca>Mn (not only on an obvious wt% basis, but even worse on the required mol% basis). If you mean one of the bright white blobs that's not identified or labeled on the image, well that may be possible, but as this image stands now, it doesn't explicitly show the featured mineral.

Hi Frank:

The labelled sample was as close as I could get. There is no other data that I can recover that gives a notated sample with the Pieczkaite chemistry. This is however the correct paragenesis for Pieczkaite and the brighter blobs will be higher in Mn. The others are part way along the Chlorapatite-Pieczkaite join. The note on the characterization article for Pieczkaite says the smaller the grain size, the higher in Mn the grains become.

Hi Frank:

Tait, Ball and Hawthorne in their 2015 characterization of Pieczkaite did not include a backscatter image of the Ca-Mn chlorapatite phases.
