GeneralIncluding dates in descriptions of localities

It has been on my mind for some time now, but never got so far to send in an official complaint.

I just read Rolf Luetcke's short story about a mineral that couldn't have been found at a specific place: "Detective Work on a Rare Mineral". Nice story! Read it!

Next step was to look into "neyite", I had never heard about it, so I checked this page.

Next step was to take a look at the known localities for this mineral, and just by chance I chose to look at the  Whiskey Canyon prospect, Lewis Mining District, Lander County, Nevada, USA .

And that is when I yet again got frustrated, when reading the following description:

Deposit: Vein in shear zone this prospect encompasses several older claims, one of which (treasure vault) has been mentioned separately. The prospect is currently being explored for Au-Ag potential by noranda co., and drilling operations are under way.

Development: Currently being explored by noranda co.

Two times "currently", but no date whatsoever.

I would probably have been able to find out what this "currently" meant in the year 2024 by doing some detective work, but it would be infinitely more convenient if all the people who contribute to Mindat had in some kind of way added a date to their descriptions. Just a year between brackets would do the job.

I really do hope to convince many contributors, especially when it comes to current work being done on deposits. I follow all developments regarding REE-deposits, and then it is decisive to know exactly when/what/where kind of work is being done.

Thank you all in advance...

Year would be 1980.

Wherever I see “currently” or “recently” I always cringe. No such wording should be used in the descriptions or text without adding a bracketed (year or date). Failure to do so renders the comment useless in a “short period of time”. So unless you have access to the history notes you cannot determine when the “current” or “recent” event occurred.

It comes down to those who do add such info to make it clear for future readers. Unfortunately we will never be able to enforce it - many can’t even be bothered to follow the basic “rules” now.

I guess adding a comment about a recent event is still better than no comment at all !!!

We should have a way of being able to report bad description changes back to the contributor in the same way we can with photos.

Ron,
I fully agree, and it's not only limited to localities.
I frequently see mineral pages with text that has a time constraint, but no year is given.

Sometimes an indication like "at the time of the original publication" is mentioned, but I don't see why that should not be replaced by the actual year of publication (which would leave less doubt and be shorter at the same time).

I'm still convined that any information that is not found in a general guidebook, and is mentioned on a mindat page, should be referenced. At least that way we would know where certain data comes from.

maybe we should trap certain words such as "currently" and not allow them :)

Or at least bring up a warning saying "The description uses the word 'currently' - please make sure this is given a date context eg 'Currently (2024)'

Yes, an automated warning would be a good solution.

Excellent idea.
I am pretty sure that only a limited number of contributors to Mindat actually reads this discussion.

Would you have a way of directly sending a request to all Mindat members requesting their cooperation?

And definitely, bring up warnings when using the word "currently"!

50 people have input 90% of the nonphoto data.
This thread has been replied to by people who have entered half of the locality data.

Yep, good idea.
I suggest to also include "curently" and "presently".

Why not simply post the date when the text was added:

(posted May 1, 2017) currently, this locality is....

Dates are already recorded as part of the history change log.

The data is not always added on one date and may have been added earlier.

Jeff

That would get out of hand and become very annoying when looking up thinks.

Localities may have info added frequently, especially when it is relatively new - additional information / corrections / changes in operations etc.

I couldn't think of anything worse than seeing a page of text with virtually every line with a posted date.

What do you do with text that has been removed altogether and there is a blank line?

I guess one could go through the history log and manually enter the date the "current status" or similar remark was first entered.

Agreeed it’s annoying, though I know I have fallen into this trap myself, and try to correct it when I see it.
Maybe getting the date from the history log could be automated, else I doubt it will happen much.
I have access to the history log, but I guess not everybody does so. And sometimes these logs are not easy to interpret, very long and somewhat confusing.

I am unsure how this works, does any registered user have access to the history log, or only users with a higher level of access?

21st Jan 2024 04:48 UTCHerwig Pelckmans

Experts and up (= level 2 users and up) have access to the history log. Level 1 users do not.
