LocalitiesIpê mine, Golconda mining district, Governador Valadares, Minas Gerais, Brazil

21st Dec 2023 13:26 UTCJhonatan Gomes

There is a mistake here, as they removed the ipê mine from the Golconda district. If there is any doubt, note the distance between janela mine, Farias mine and ipê mine.

Cheers.

Yes there are something not correct here  that needs to be sorted out.

I see that we have  two Golconda districts, non of them political entities. We have the non -hierchial Golconda pegmatite field, see https://www.mindat.org/loc-4513.html
but  also  Golconda  (defined as a mining district,  as a sublocality under Governador Valadares) . https://www.mindat.org/loc-281837.html
I am not sure if we need both? Are they not the same?

In Brazil we have 2 definitions for district:

It may be an administrative division of a municipality or city, which may comprise one or more neighborhoods. Or the understanding of district speaking in a geological way.

I mentioned this in another topic, but I'm going to mention it again because the opportunity has arrived:

The mining region in the city of Governador Valadares is within the "district" of Golconda, which is the rural region of the city, where the farms are located. This definition of pegmatite fields was created in mindat after the edition of mineralogical records with the theme "Golconda"...

So, I can say the following: the pegmatites are within the Golconda (municipal) district.

There are several mines there, as you can see and know, the most appropriate thing would be to introduce all these mines only within Golconda (as a place that belongs to the administration of Governador Valadares)

Even in one of those links you sent me, it's me next to the sign.

Thanks for your answer. The problem as I see it it not the question of moving Ipê under Golconda, that may be done relatively easily. The problem is about the hierarchy and the proper updated division of the Municipality of Governador Valadares into separate districts. So thanks for helping us sorting this out.

I can not find Golconda district listed under the lists of districts in the Municipality of Governador Valadares: https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lista_de_distritos_de_Governador_Valadares

Is there a fault with the list? Or is it not updated ?

I also  see that some mines listed under the Golconda (mining district) , belongs to Santo Antônio do Pontal  district.  Thus when differnt mines in a mining district are belonging to different political districts, we are using a non-hierarchial localities in Mindat. The
Golconda pegmatite field, see https://www.mindat.org/loc-4513.html  is an example of thsi

Wikipedia is not a reliable site for us, even in school work we are warned "don't use Wikipedia". Proof of this is that if you go to the Governador Valadares city hall website it talks about works carried out in Golconda.

Another thing is that they are completely disregarding the Brazilian bibliography, as well as the scientific articles carried out in the Ipê mine where they refer to Golconda, and Governador Valadares. Defining the location of a mine in another country using a mapping application is completely subjective. For example: how many roads give access to golconda district? Will it be possible to see it on the map?

Imagine, if I, a Brazilian, change in mindat the location of a mine that has existed for over 30 years in England, using Wikipedia as a basis for argument?

I am in favor of the following: put natives of each country as administrators, there will be no better people to solve this type of problem.

If the OSM map is correct , the Ipê mine belongs to the Santo Antônio do Pontal district  (political division).

Don't be so sure, natives we can be wrong about our own country too.
Furthermore, in addition to having knowledge of the geography, geology and mineralogy of the country, there are other issues to take into account that may take years to confirm, such as editing expertise, regular dedication, reliability, fair play, etc.
It is not easy to find good volunteer collaborators everywhere.

By the way, natives should take care of Wikipedia information from their own country. After all, the quality and reliability of this information creates the public image of the country in the eyes of the world.

I do not believe that it is in the interest of the Brazilian mineralogical community to "update" Wikipedia for this purpose, for certain subjects we use Google Scholar to search for duly validated scientific research.

As for reliability, sorry but it was a bit contradictory, considering the location we are discussing:

Does this mean that in Brazil there are no reliable natives, and because of this, foreigners who have never come here make decisions about our locations in the country?

I've been to Golconda dozens of times, most of the local photos that Mindat has of it were posted by me, including the Ipê mine. So, I don't have a place to speak, but does anyone who searched on Wikipedia have it?

Jhonatan, I really do respect  that natives in a country knows their country far more better than a foreigner that has not set their foot in the country - and that is one of the reason for countinuing this conversation. And the second reason is to try to clear up things so that the facts are not based on subjective ideas but on objective ones.

And yes, sometime Wikipedia contains mistakes- and that was the reason for asking my questions above.

You said above:

So, I can say the following: the pegmatites are within the Golconda (municipal) district.

Going to the official site of the Governador Valadares  https://www.valadares.mg.gov.br/
there is a  map showing the current  political  (municipal) districts of Governador Valadares ( The map is callled " Distrios de Governador Valadares"). Here is a direct link to the map

You also see the map above.   What I can see from this official map is that there is no "Golconda district" in this map.
The area where the mines in the Golconda mining district is located, as far as I can tell from the coordinates given for the mines, iare  partly in the
Santo Antônio do Pontal district  and partly in the lightbrownish area without a name close to the border of the Santo Antônio do Pontal district.

All this makes me pose the question:  Is there a Golconda politcal (municipal ) that does  exist in the current divison in Brazil or not?.  ( I am not talking about the Golconda area or the Golconda mining area - which there are no doubt about)

If you have other information with maps that define a border of a Golconda ( municipal) district, please do  tell us, so we can add this.

The large lightbrownish (beige) area in the map above (from 2002) must be the municipality of Governador Valadares itself. Anyway, from 2017 the administrative subdivision of "Região Geográfica Intermediária de Governador Valadares" is divided now in only four "regiões geográficas imediatas" in turn conformed by grouped municipalities where Golconda doesn't appear anywhere: https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regi%C3%A3o_Geogr%C3%A1fica_Intermedi%C3%A1ria_de_Governador_Valadares

The only place called Golconda in Minas Gerais I could find is a fazenda (ranch) located 1 km SE of the mine.
Seem that Golconda is not an administrative division but a physical geography place that gave name to the fazenda and to the mine, which in turn gave name to the pegmatite field.

As "Golconda" is not a municipality it could be removed as hierarchy level by merging it to "Alto da Golconda mine", leaving the sublocalities (Alto da Golconda, Escondido and Pedra Azul) loose in "Governador Valadares" and linked with themself in "Golconda pegmatite field" (as currently)

Guys,

Golconda is a small community grown during the gold times of the Golconda mining district.

Administrative districts in Brazil are just used for census reason, absolutely nothing else. It has no political/administration/decision power at all.

Santo Antônio do Pontal is just another community without any administrative people/power. It has no influence on Golconda community and , by the way, no real roads connecting them.

Everything in Golconda is direct to Governador Valadares.

Therefore makes absolutely no sense to include Santo Antônio do Pontal in the Golconda locality names!
