Generalsulfur from Washoe Co., Nevada
2nd Jun 2023 04:45 UTCDon Windeler
My question is whether it's safe to attribute the piece to the Steamboat Springs district or if there are any other spots in the county that are known to have sourced big clean crystals. I'm feeling pretty safe about this attribution given the volume of other sulfur specimens from this spot, but always prefer to check that there's not something out there that I'm missing.
Cheers,
D.

Hi Don,
You can be confident that your specimen is from Steamboat Springs. Although there are a couple of other spots up here where sulfur occurs, none of them produce crystals like those found at Steamboat.

The description of
Silica pit, Steamboat Springs Mining District
says"May be the same as Steamboat Springs Mine."
Russ: Do you agree? Should they be merged? (Coordinates are nearly the same.)

Thanks for the confirmation -- I'll add "Steamboat Springs Mining District" to the label I use. When I get around to photographing and posting I'll include reference to this discussion as well.
Have an excellent weekend!

Uwe,
Yes they should be merged. The marker for both locations is directly over the the Ormat Steamboat Power Plant, a geothermal power plant. I would keep the Silica Pit location.
