This specimen is from Paraíba, Brazil ( https://www.mindat.org/loc-21289.html ) not Irai and should be moved.

Russ,
Thanks for noticing, it was a gift with the old information.

Rolf,

I think when these were more common, many of them were erroneously sold as being from Minas Gerais.  Even 35 years ago when I first started collecting; detailed locality information was not as common as it is today.  Many specimens just had the name of the country and maybe the state\province.   Minas Gerais was a catch-all location or lots of stuff from Brazil.   Just as Gilgit was for Pakistan, Mibladen for Morocco, etc..

I am assuming these agates from Paraiba are what are called "Polyhedral Agate"  and they were quite common, and could be purchased quite cheaply, from rockshops back in the 970's . Just recently I noticed one of these which was quite nice with a really good polish but only 8 cm in size was sold for over $300 (US) just recently by a US dealer. One other thing is that in general agates (such as the Paraiba Polyhedral Agate that back in the good old days was regarded as being from Minas Gerais, along with everything else from Brazil back then too) are now fetching prices that would have been considered to be unbelievable now back in the day when they were quite common in most rockshops that were around to support the "rockhound" industry back then. I can remember seeing (and not purchasing) agates that were then available from most of the major agate producing regions. I was a pure mineral collector back then and did not consider such things as polished specimens as being a worthwhile addition to my collection. Something that has now changed and I am now wishing that I had picked them up cheaply when they were available as my whole attitude has changed about these type of minerals.
