There is something I wanted to add here. I was given a tour of the University of Arizona lab and talking about the equipment it was said that a hand unit was not too far down the road. Apparently it has been produced. What I wanted to add here was something that was discussed at the U of A lab, that is that the unit would need to be calibrated to all the species that were to be analyzed, just like the big units they have at the lab. If the mineral is not in the device, big or small, it will not determine it. So, with the hand unit above, it is not calibrated to work with mineral species but chemicals. So, I think that a hand unit for minerals may still be some ways off.

There are a number of units that are calibrated to common rock-forming minerals, I suspect that's what these students are doing, where it's important to know in the field if an ugly grey stuff is feldspar, nepheline, etc.
