Everything I've clicked on so far just... works as expected. That's impressive. If every major software upgrade everywhere was done this carefully, troubleshooting folks like me would be out of their day jobs. :-)

(OK, just spotting two small glitches after all, here in the message-composition form: the "src" and "help" button icons seem to be missing. The HTML page is looking for them at /phorum5/mods/bbcode/icons/src.gif and /phorum5/phorum5/mods/editor_tools/icons/help.gif respectively. The latter path has one "phorum/" too many; not sure about the former.)

And now I am wondering which copper compounds have been used for the colour scheme. ;-)

When you click on a link in the top row of a localiy page, so you have than a second row with links (e.g. "Display" "Standard", "Detailed",...). The colour of writing is not ergonomic. Safari (latest versions)

As you can see Internet Explorer really doesn't work well with modern web designs, and so we will NOT support it - sorry.

I have added a warning at the top of the page so that IE users know they are running an out-of-date browser.

I've had issues viewing a good majority of images on mindat lately, before the update (for the past several months) and after as well. I'm using Google Chrome, and mindat has been treating me with broken image icons everywhere. This issue doesn't appear when I attempt with Internet Explorer, but I have no intentions of browsing with IE. Deleting site cache from my Chrome browser doesn't seem to fix the issue. Images work fine for just about any other website I browse, however. Any ideas?

18th Apr 2018 09:40 UTCRik Dillen Expert

Yesterday I discovered a beautiful makeover of the MINDAT webpages, but...

When opening MINDAT today I saw the following quite rude message:

>>>>>Sorry - you are using an old, incompatible browser. Internet Explorer and older browser versions are not supported and may not display correctly. Please try Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

Edge causes a lot of trouble with e.g. our online banking system and several other systems, and Google Chrome is causing incompatibility problems and interferes with other Microsoft components (e.g. try to get rid of Chrome once it's installed !!).

So bear in mind that those browsers generate a lot of problems as well! I have no intention to install a specific browser for each website!

Just make the website (also) compatible with Internet Explorer again instead. If your members want to cope (and remedy) with the supposed vulnerabilities of I.E. that's their own choice and responsibility.

BTW, the language of the message on the top of the home page of MINDAT sounds aggressive and rather humiliating.

18th Apr 2018 10:04 UTCRik Dillen Expert

I posted my previous message quite fast. I apologize for the somewhat assertive tone of my 'voice', but want to express my appreciation for the work of the MINDAT team. MINDAT is an absolutely splendid initiative for the mineral collectors community, that is very much appreciated. The use of specific types of browsers is a minor topic, and I (and others) will have to adapt their PC-configuration accordingly. So I will respect Jolyon's opinion. Greetings, and enjoy MINDAT further as before!

This is not actually the case with me. I am using Internet Explorer 11, which is the latest and greatest version; I don't know why the website thinks it is an "old and incompatible browser." I get that older versions of I.E. are not exactly desirable to use anymore, and I wouldn't see the need to support those either. But the website looks fine and loads correctly otherwise, and I like it!!! Thanks and great job.

Actually Microsoft has stopped development on IE11 and has gone to "Edge" as their current browser.

So no, IE11 is not compatible with modern web technology, which is why Microsoft have abandoned developing it any further.

Hi Jolyon,

Seems that the front page images at least are now working for me before I even attempted your suggestion. Hopefully it will remain that way. Still, I've disabled extensions, and also attempted to disable plugins altogether on Chrome. Nothing seems to be any different.

However, there are still some images that do not work for me: 1) some that work in IE while broken in Chrome, 2) some that do not show up in either browser. An example of 1) is the icon of the src button within the textbox messaging options...shows up as the proper icon in IE while the icon picture is broken in Chrome. An example of 2) is the left photo showcasing baryte at this link: https://www.mindat.org/loc-233423.html

This image seems to be broken in both Chrome and IE. On Chrome, when you right click an image and select "Open image in new tab", the image should show up. However, for this image, I get this error message:

Warning: Division by zero in /home/mindat/www/imgcache_class.php on line 261

The updated Mindat format is attractive and mostly seems to work well. Some debugging is to be expected when rolling out a project of this magnitude. I appreciate the thought and effort that have gone into it.

Regarding POD, I would prefer that the preview show a slice of the photo in correct proportion rather than the entire image, squashed out of shape.

For my part I hate trying to keep up with the perpetual obsolescence of computer technology. I have a BS in computer science; computers were fun back when we controlled them and they worked for us. When that relationship reversed a decade or two ago I lost interest in trying to keep up.

Despite the new format and despite changing my browser to Chrome, the same problems persist for me that I've mentioned a number of times over the past few years.

The first attempt to log in always fails.

The second attempt to log in succeeds but does not show me logged in. The only way I know I'm logged in is that the message boards indicate unread threads in red.

Well if I am the only one, fine, but I preferred the site as it was...

For as far as I can tell of course! ;)

I realise I am becoming a dinosaur, but I do not use a smartphone... and the fact that

more and more sites are designed to fit on those tiny screens make them look silly

on my 19 inch screen, of which the outer 4 inches are hardly used anymore!

Fine, I am using a very old computer. Why not? It still works fine!

Running edge on windows 7 is a nightmare, I hear from people who know.

And besides, Jolyon, I checked my favourites. I have just under 300 websites there

that I use on a regular basis. None of them has an issue with my 'old' browser.

Mindat is the first site that tells me they no longer support my browser!

I will have to live with the fact I am becoming a minority I guess. But I sure think

I am not alone...

Eddy

8th Oct 2019 07:00 UTCBart Cannon

You are NOT alone.  I am Legacy Man.  I still have a working computer system for data analysis that uses DOS 6.3.    I hate keeping up with Windows.  Three of my analysis packages require Windows XP, and I am forced to keep using them.   I actually like XP, and it still works fine for many of my needs.  I prefer it over Windows 10, but I'm stuck with Windows 10.

The fast changing tech world is getting bad for analytical applications.  Used to be that a product was good for 10 years until it became legacy gear.  Now it's about  2.5 years.  Princeton Gamma Tech has thousands of EDS systems for electron microscopy around the World.  They were recently bought by Bruker, I think, and the usurper did not keep any of the PGT staff.   Everyone is out of luck, including me.

True Bart, it’s annoying how many useful applications fall off the list because people give up rewriting them for the latest operating system. And the network at work shuts down once a month to add patches. Surely there is something wrong with this picture? I’m not convinced things are working much better or any faster, just getting overloaded with fancy stuff we don’t need. Well that’s my grumpy old gripe done for the day!

20th Apr 2018 11:53 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

Eddy,

I'm not entirely sure you have noticed, but the new home page uses MORE of your 19" screen than the old one! It has been designed to make better use of your screen, not just for smartphone!

Edge does not work on Windows 7, it is only for Windows 10 (officially) , so on Windows 7 your only options are Chrome, Firefox or Opera (I don't *officially* support Opera, but it seems to work fine with Mindat)

The problem is that to support Internet Explorer is not just a matter of some small changes, it requires almost TWO entirely different versions of the home page, one for modern browsers, one for Internet Explorer. Less than 7% of our users use Internet Explorer (probably a lot less, as many bots report themselves as Internet Explorer to avoid detection) so we really can't justify the cost of developing IE support - especially when IE is now being replaced by Edge on Windows.

Fortunately, I think the internal pages work better on IE than the home page. Remember, we are not deliberately making IE stop working, I would love it if there were easy ways to make the site work with IE.

If anyone wants to take this on as a project, and provide an easy CSS or Javascript fix to make the new site work better with IE, then I'd be delighted to implement it. I just don't have the time to do this myself.

Hello Jolyon,

I really like the new webpage format. I've been mostly a passive reader of the site over the years, but have found it very helpful in my work on inclusions in glass. I just discovered the "search by element" feature, which I thought was very nicely executed.

In any case, I am using Windows 10 with the Edge browser, and the POTD on the home page appears vertically compressed until you click on it. From what I gather above, that should not be happening, so I wanted to let you know.

Thank you for your work on the site,

Brandon

I've noticed something I did not see earlier. When I view a mineral gallery (location, individual mineral, a person's gallery), the image gets cut off on the right side -- basically half the image is viewable, and there is no way to swipe over to see the whole specimen). This only happens on my mobile Chrome browser.

Tilting the phone to widescreen view doesn't fix it, as it keeps the original perspective. When I select use desktop version, it fixes the issue, so I have to do that every time I view something in a gallery. So something with my Chrome is cutting off half the image from the screen. I don't like other mobile browsers, they all seem to have one or two problems and Chrome seems to be the most reliable at the moment... Any ideas why Chrome can't fit the screen properly?

My desktop looks great and runs really well so I have yet to see any problems there!

20th Apr 2018 15:48 UTCScott Rider

I forgot to add, Chrome won't let me zoom in or out of the page, so I can't use that either... I have to use the option "use desktop version" to get it to work properly.

Other than that, I really, really like the responsiveness of the site. It, for me at least, is much faster to search, to load pages, and images pop up much, much faster!! Overall, great job!!

20th Apr 2018 18:31 UTCThomas Lühr Expert

I have the same issue as Scott describes, using Android and Chrome. To me it looks that the photos would fit into the screen, in case they would start at the same position as the caption text starts.

With other words, they seem to be correctly scaled, but positioned somewhat to much to the right.

20th Apr 2018 21:37 UTCKristi Hugs

ok, so i took a year or so off and come back to WOW!!! Will definitely take some getting used to but change always does, right? Jolyon, what an undertaking and well done! I may have to spend weeks here to play catch up!

20th Apr 2018 23:38 UTCDoug Schonewald

Eddy,

I too am using IE. I am also using Windows 8.1. I purposely ordered my system with Windows 8.0 because I have several remote devices that don't function with Windows 10. I did not want to have to replace those devices just to change to Windows 10 and Edge.

There is a work-around for Windows 7 & 8 if you wish to use Edge but it is cumbersome and doesn't function well so I stayed with IE. Chrome is a resource hog and gobbles RAM, Mindat is an important part of my computer use but it is not the only use and I find Chrome doesn't work for me and my system well. I uninstalled it. The older version of Firefox was also a resource gobbler and while they say the new version is better I hesitate to bother with it. Since I seldom, if ever, look at the home page IE seems to be working fine for me. As I get deeper maybe I'll see problems I don't see now. Just in case I exported my catalog to my desk-top. If it becomes a major problem I can always go back to cataloging the old way.

If you are seeing the image vertically compressed then you have an out-of-date version of Microsoft Edge installed. Please make sure you run Windows Update and get your system up to date.

As mentioned above we can't support IE any more. Some pages will work, some won't. If mindat is important to you I suggest you try Firefox again.

The distortion of the POD occurs at work where they still use Explorer. Nothing I can do about that, but I'm glad to see that it works right elsewhere.

I use Mozilla Firefox on Windows 10 at home, and I am completely satisfied with it as a web browser. I don't use Edge, Chrome, or Explorer at all when I can avoid it. Everything I have tried so far in Mindat works fine under Firefox, with one exception: on a specimen page, the scroll ribbon for the popup caption works backward--you have to mouse upward to make the text move down and vice versa.

21st Apr 2018 13:40 UTCJolyon Ralph Founder

There are still a few bugs in Firefox which mean I generally prefer using Chrome instead. Yes, it's resource-hungry, but it's not expensive to add a whole heap of memory to a computer these days.

21st Apr 2018 16:48 UTCScott Rider

I use Firefox and it seems to run quite well on it. But I have used it a lot on that browser. I stopped using Chrome on my desktop due to the resource issues (always causing issues with other programs), and Firefox seemed to fit the bill for now...

I use IE - the major problem I have is the yellow sign on the top of the page that says I am using an outdated browser. This sign is displayed continously on every mindat page I go to after having received the "information" on the start page and opted to continue to use IE.

It goes away when I log in.

So, many sites have an option to stay logged in - would that be a possibility?

Another solution would be to rephrase this information and move it to a more discrete place - "Mindat support only the following browsers - X, Y, Z...
