Field CollectingCroatia, Slovenia, southern Czech Republic, southwestern Hungary?

Hello everyone...

The wife and I will be taking a nice vacation to this area later this year (May). I was wondering if anyone knew of any good spots that a regular guy like myself could stop by and spend some time looking for a few good specimens to take home and remember the trip by? TIA

Any minerals? Any sizes? Or what's your collecting focus?

I would love to find just about any kind of crystal specimens. Keep in mind they cant be very large. I would have to carry or pack them to fly back home. I am not particular about any certain mineral. I am open. This is all about finding an interesting specimen(s) to remember our trip by. Any suggestions you have are greatly appreciated!

Scott, Don't forget that central Europe is probably the world's densest population of mineral collectors - nowhere else on the globe even comes close! That means everything good that is also easy to collect is already very well picked over. You might have to do some serious climbing or digging to get anything. The only part of your stated area that I've done any field collecting myself was on the many dumps around Pribram, but that was back in the 1990s - but, who knows, there might still be a few micromounts the Czech collectors have overlooked ;-)

I would suggest goto Mezica (as hundreds other did before) http://www.mindat.org/loc-20078.html.

Take the underground trip which is nice. If you are lucky and got an early reservation take the trip with a canoo (a movie from me is here on mindat).

You can buy wulfenites at very cheap prices and you will be happy.

Thank you everyone for the advice! I appreciate it!

Hello everyone! My wife and I are back from our vacation. We had a great time. We did the underground kayaking at the Mezica mine. It was fun and very interesting! I was able to pick up some specimens from the mine floor. Nothing great but still interesting. I did pick up a specimen that I am guessing is gray colored calcite. I will test and see. Picked up some bulk galena and zinc. I would recommend the trip. Heads up, you do have to descend approximately 1000 stair steps but you come back up a different path later. Have fun!

Nice to hear I was helpful with my tip!

Mezica is always worth a travel.
