PhotosFluorite - Cave-In-Rock Mine, Cave-In-Rock, Cave-in-Rock Sub-District, Illinois - Kentucky Fluorspar District, Hardin Co., Illinois, USA

19th Jun 2015 15:03 UTCJamison K. Brizendine 🌟 Expert

This specimen is listed twice with two different Cave-In-Rock Mines:

The Cave-In-Rock Mine was one of the oldest mines in the district and closed in the 1930s early 1940s, but pillar robbing did occur here in the early 1980s. Documented specimens from this mine are very rare. Fluorites from this locality occurred at the Sub-Rosiclare Level and were purple in color. I don’t think blue fluorite was ever found at this locality, but I could be mistaken….

The Minerva #1 Mine/Ozark-Mahoning #1 Mine, on the other hand was active for a longer period of time from the 1940s to 1976 as the Minerva #1 and then from 1989-1996 as the Ozark-Mahoning #1. Blue fluorite from this locality occurred at the Rosiclare Level…

I believe this to be a Minerva #1 Mine, Rosiclare Level specimen and not a Cave-In-Rock Mine specimen…

I agree with Jamison. Blue fluorite as pictured was mostly from the mines in the Harris Creek district of Illinois. The Minerva #1 Mine or Ozark-Mahoning mine was 1 of 3 in the Harris Creek mining district near Rosiclare and Cave In Rock Illinois. These 3 mines produced many of the finest specimens from the district and were essentially the last to close in 1996. Altho, I believe small amounts of mining may be still going on at least intermittently and in Kentucky as well as Illinois. The 2 other mines in this district were the Denton Mine and the Annabel Lee Mine. As of about 2007 the head frame from the Annabel lee mine still was standing , easily visible from nearby highway Illinois 1. Also, as of about 2010 the Hastie family owned a stone quarry right adjacent to the Harris Creek mines and had mineral rights in that area, but the quarrying was mostly stone for road construction etc. I haven't personally been down there in about 6 years now so my info may not be the latest. CHEERS……BOB
