Mineral ShowsLocality for today's POTD

5th Feb 2015 08:39 UTCDavid Baldwin

I have been wondering about this for a while now, because of some of my own 'home grown' specimens. Is the unidentified mineral today's POTD actually from said locality or is it from a box in Uwe's cupboard? You could argue that if the specimen hadn't been collected, polished and stored in specific conditions, this mineral wouldn't have formed as it has. Any thoughts?

Hmm

The fact that its has formed on polished surface does seem to render it as an "unnatural" or artificial mineral in the strict sense. May qualify as "mineral art".

Interesting photo though.

Cheers

"Is the unidentified mineral today's POTD actually from said locality".

Yes, it (and other, less aesthetic sulphide efflorescences) formed after the sphalerite-rich sample was polished.

The other SEM photos are all from this polished sample.
