GeneralHelp reading old label...

13th Nov 2013 16:31 UTCJasun D. McAvoy Expert

I have an old acanthite specimen from Kongsberg that has a terrific old label. The only problem is I have not idea what it says. Besides being in German (?), I cannot decipher the script. I can make out the obvious details - the specimen is labeled as "silberglanz" (antiquated term for acanthite), dated July, 1872, and tere is a mention of a Dr. Scheerer as well. Obviously there is a lot more information here however.

Can anyone help me figure out what it says?

Filling in the blanks:

Hexaeder vorherrschend, mit Oktaeder o, & Spuren von Dodekaeder & Leuzitoeder-Flächen.

(Dominant hexahedron, modified by the octahedron and traces of dodecahedral and leucitohedral faces.)

Die steinmarkartige Substanz ist mit der Stahlnadel leicht ritzbar.

(The substance resembling "Steinmark" - described as pea-yellow earlier - is easily scratched by a steel needle.

Mindat knows of "Steinmark" as a synonym for lithomarge.)

"Eisenstein" without further qualification could be just about any of the common iron secondaries but probably means limonite/goethite.

And "Kalkspath" (the matrix) is calcite, of course.

Hope this helps!

Enjoy,

Gerhard

"Silberglanz, mit Eisenstein ..."

I read: ... mit Eisenkies <= iron sulphide>
