Techniques for Collectorsnitric acid

Hi

I'm interested in doing qualitative analysis on some of my specimens.Does anyone know where I could buy a small amount(250cc) on nitric acid at a reasonable price? Thanks.

Bob;

It seems that nitrates of any kind are harder to come by since 911. Most supply houses don't want to deal with you unless you are a company or educational facility or unless you want to buy a larger amount. You can try Elemental Scientific, they sell small amounts of various chemicals and I think I saw nitric acid listed. Just Google them and have a look at thier website. Living in Canada, I haven't tried to order stuff from these guys because I haven't had a chance to get a hold of Canada Cunstoms to see if it will clear, so I can't say how they are to deal with. Good luck.

Many chemicals used to be relatively cheap, but to buy small amounts today will cost you amazing amounts of money. If you have a college near you that offers chemistry courses or if you can find a company near you that makes commercial cleaners of various kinds, it would be a lot cheaper and faster if you go to them and try and bum the reagents you need. Perhaps offering to trade study minerals for their geology classes might turn the trick. But take a suitable container(s) with you to put the reagent(s) in.

Try onlinesciencemall.com Last I knew they would sell chemicals, including nitric acid, to individuals for hobby use. To expand on what Rock pointed out, the cost of shipping may be more than the cost of the chemicals. So, if you need other reagents as well, it would pay to order them all at the same time.
