Field CollectingNew Jersey Locality Clean Up

Hi all,

The other day I was in Sussex County at a well known collecting spot and was disgusted at the amount of trash. Long story short, Jeff Wilson and I have set aside March 17, 2012 at 10:30 as the day for a long overdue clean up of the site. If you care to join us in Montague, New Jersey at the appointed hour, I'll supply the trash bags and perhaps, we'll get some collecting done afterwards.

I agree, the garbage problem there, especially at the trailhead, has become really bad. This is one sure way to bring unwanted attention to a good quality collecting site. I am going to join David and any other collectors who are willing to spend just an hour or two to get this taken care of, and like David said, then we can collect at the site for a while afterwards. Good community relations, good karma, good deed, whatever you call it, this is one of those situations where rockhounds can do some good for a collecting site. I'm in!!(tu)

I can only be there 'in spirit' since I now live north of Chicago. I used to know a Senice family in Sussex. That was long ago, when I barely knew what a mineral was. Wow, so near and yet so far! But I very much appreciate what you two are doing. Take care.

Hi David.

I see Montague is right on the Pa line. I was considering going to a maple festival local to where I live, but I may drive out to NJ and help with the clean up.. And check out a locality thats new to me.

Maple or minerals?

There is a FOMS meeting on Sat. and I need to be there, so I will only be there for an hour or two, but I think we can get a bunch of trash together in that time.

There were five of us yesterday and although more help would have been appreciated, we got the job done. Two pictures, one of Jeff and Gary and the other is of my son who impressed me with his climbing ability at the collecting area.

Hi Steve,

Thanks. I know that the Nature Conservancy holds an easement further along down the trail but am unaware where their property and state property begins and ends.

The cleanup was great, and the help we got was surely appreciated. The improvement to the site is like night and day!!

The trailhead and the3 first 500 yards of the trail are owned by a commercial development company. Then there is a concrete survey pylon. to the left of the pylon is owned by the Nature Conservancy. The path and property to the right of the pylon is state open space "Green Acres" land. The quartz locality is on that land.

Thank you David,Jeffrey and all who helped with the clean up.Good news that the state owns this land.It has been a few years since I collected there.I have noticed that there is on going development in the area,as I pass by that area.I do hope there area will remain available to collecting.I know that your efforts will shine a good light on the rockhound community.
