PhotosQuartz - Rt. 11, Salem, New London Co., Connecticut, USA

Can anyone tell me about the locality this specimen came from, when it was collected, and if the local is still open to collecting. I was very interested when I saw the specimen.

I’ve been there before, I have found amethyst and quartz, the state of ct and the governor are thinking about finishing the highway. If that is the case, expect there to be more blasting and excavating in the near future.

Some of the best amethyst crystals from Conn. came from there, I've seen a killer hand specimen Bruce Jarnot had that I think he said he found in the footprint of the person walking in front of him. Rare though. Small crystals like the one pictured show up now and again. The locality is the abandoned cuts south of Rt 82. You can park under the bridge over Rt 82 and walk south on both sides of Rt 11, very overgrown now though. I go rock climbing there. As Robert above says, the state senate has voted to bond funds to finish it (with tolls to cover the cost - they say they'll take them away when it's paid for - fat chance), the House hasnt voted yet. But there will certainly be clearing and mucking out of loose rock etc. if they do so, so who knows what might turn up. There was an article in Rocks and Minerals from 1989 on it:

Rocks & Minerals Nov./Dec. 1989 Vol. 64 No.6

AMETHYST SCEPTERS

SALEM, NEW LONDON COUNTY, CONNECTICUT

WILLIAM A. HENDERSON, JR.

MICHAEL HARITOS

I can email it to anyone who wants it.

Funny how we were just chatting about this, Fritz.

Fritz email the article if you can, and I dont park under the bridge, I just drive over it and into the woods. Dave how have you been?

Thanks everyone. I will probably visit there soon. Disappointingly, though, I learned today that I have LYME DISEASE! It is possible that the aches associated will forbid any long collecting trips.

If this what you are supposed to click on, with my chrome browser nothing happens. It may be a fault of my browser. Anyone else with this problem?

Rowan,

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I picked up a deer tick in Monroe, Ct last November. Big bulls eye and three weeks of antibiotics. But thankfully, no lasting effects. Hopefully, those aches will fade away.

Yes, one can drive over the bridge by getting off onto the Rt 11 median just before the southbound last exit (for Rt 82) on the completed stretch of Rt 11. Not all vehicles will be up for the rough ride and terribly overgrown (with autumn olive - did you know the berries in the fall are edible and taste good?) trip along the undeveloped right-of-way. Thus I suggest parking on Rt 82 until you've scouted it out on foot, or with a mountain bike. Fantastic cuts in the Hope Valley alaskite gneiss.

I had Lyme disease once also, felt like I had the flu but without all the congestion. A week or so of antibiotics fixed me right up.

It was also not at all obvious to me, the first time I read one, that the title for these photo discussions is the link to the photo. A minor thing I think mindat should revise.
