Field CollectingTahoe Day Trip Suggestions?

We were thinking of Virginia City, are there any tailings piles, or places for the public to collect?
Maybe Gardnerville or Markleeville, I heard there are plenty of mines there, but I have no idea whats open to the public.
We thought about Petersen Mountain, but I heard that is completely claimed and closed.
Also, Placerville and Georgetown are both out as Hwy 50 is closed for repairs.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated, thanks!!
Warm regards,
Corie

Try Crystal Peak west of Verdi in CA near the CA/NV line. Access is best from the north at Bordertown on Rt. 395. The road will be muddy in spots this time of year, but the snow should be pretty much gone.
I have seen some small quartz and amethyst specimens from some of the dumps around Virginia City, but I have never collected in that area.
Good luck,
Steve

We wound up sleeping in, and decided to take the dog and went to the Southern Comstock Mine Site in Silver City, Nevada. It's just outside of Virginia City.
What a great day it turned out to be! I have many beautiful quartz plates soaking now and will post a few pics tomorrow or Friday. Found some light amethyst plates, and some other crystals that I think might be arsenic! Very exciting!
Afterwards, we went into the Delta, won several beers ::o And found a ten dollar bill on the floor. All in all, a GREAT day!!
Thanks again!
