Improving Mindat.orgBlack Forest mineral list

6th May 2011 09:28 UTCSebastian Möller Expert

Hello,

I've looked through the mineral list for the Black Forest, Germay.

There are two entries that are wrong:

1. The elbaite entry: Elbaite is known from that area, but from Freiberg (some water channel excavation in 19th century) and possibly Ottenhöfen (Indicolite is reported from there, but as far as I know without any state-of-the-art analysis). The mentioned locality entry Offenburg is wrong, as is the picture. The mineral depicted is fluorapatite. There is a German article about those 'tourmaline suns' being in fact fluorapatite. The Offenburg entry most likely is referring to the Ohlsbach locality, which is not far away (10 km) of Offenburg.

2. The linnaeite entry: As a locality Friedrich-August mine, Horbach is listed. This is wrong, as the mineral from there is described by Walenta (1992) as nickel-linnaeite, which is violarite or polydymite, being the first one at that locality.

i second that, this is from Hinterohlsbach http://www.mindat.org/loc-22157.html

clearly one of the typical apatite suns from there, they are described (and pictured) in K. Walenta, Mineralien aus dem Schwarzwald, 1979. I have some specimens from there which were collected in the 1970s.

cheers

(1) Indicolite is a name given to blue tourmalines and as such, is a purely descriptive term that does not imply any reference to a particular chemical composition. It is often considered as a varietal name for elbaite, but this is actually wrong. In fact, it is often elbaite, but not always: http://www.mindat.org/min-2027.html

(2) Message sent to uploader of the "elbaite" photo

(3) References for the linnaeite will be investigated.
