PhotosAquamarine - Halzenberg, Bergisches Land, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

Hi!

I think here is something going wrong because there aren´t some possibilities for beryl in Bergisches Land. I think more this speciem comes from HAUZENBERG in BAYRISCHEN WALD. In Bayrischen Wald you find granites etc with pegmatites and beryls are well known from there. The Bergisches Land area is part of the rhenish massiv and has mostly devonian stuff like slates, limestones and quarzites...

Cheers

I agree with Thomas,

this is most probably Hauzenberg in Bavaria. No chance for such aquamarine beryl in the Bergisches Land ... i would like to see the old label, could be a (common) transcription error issue with the old german writing.

Cheers

Roger

Complaint sent.

btw, if any Beryl would occur in the Bergisches Land, I would have found some ;-)

We acquired this specimen in an old collection with specimens dating from the earlier part of the 1900's. The old labels were handwritten and there were a few specimens that had significant misspellings or commonly found misattributions. The idea that Roger put forth makes a lot of sense. Many of the labels noted just the mine or town followed by the country. The less locality info there is the more likely it is for such errors to be present.

I will see if I still have a picture of the label in our records just for kicks...
