Identity HelpNew topic on old topic....

Has anyone ever heard of any instances of Jadeite in Utah? I recently had an XRD ran on a blue stone I had asked about way back when, and the results came back as Jadeite. Is that even possible, or could the test be faulty? The only reason I am asking is I can find no literature here or anywhere, (even in the old bulletins from Utah State and BYU), that have any localities for Jadeite from Utah. Are there other minerals that could give a faulty reading that is close to Jadeite?

Thanks in advance,

Rocky

Rocky,

All the old timers will tell you about the jade from St. George and Cedar City. I haven't be able to find out a location either. I have purchased a few hundred pounds of the material. It ranges from drab olive green and light lavender mottled in a mass of cream white.

It cuts and polishes very much like Wyoming jade but that is not really an identification test.

I will try to get some photographed this weekend and get it on here.

What does yours look like?

Do you know exactly where it is from?

Who tested it?

Rick,

If you don't mind posting some pics, that would be awesome! The pics of the stone are in mindats identity help section under "Blue Whatzit". I posted in early Dec. My son faxed me some sheets from the XRD this morning, (hell, I don't even know what it is, I am just a middle aged,(thats being generous) rockhound). He is the Professor of Organic Chemistry in Wyoming, and had the test ran for me. I have some claims in central Utah for Barium, Wollastonite, garnets, (nice green, just don't have any idea what type), and serpentine. I found this at the base of a wide vein of serpentine, and have dug two others in situ out of the serpentine. Whatever it is, it seems to form in nodules in the serpentines. I only had a small piece of the blue tested, the white material that makes up approx 25% of the stone was not tested...Now, if we could only find out where the old timers had collected thiers....
