Identity Helpglassy green stone - need help identifying

6th Jul 2009 00:52 UTCscgem

I don't know the physical properties of this 'rock or mineral'...found this on our hunting property in the upstate of south carolina. It appeared to me like emerald because it was clear and so grassy green...I have looked all over the internet for pics to help...at a loss...what else can I describe to help? I am currently looking for someone in South or North carolina I can take it too to test for us... if you ball up your fist, that is about how big the larger piece is....no sun out sunday when taking this, sorry.

The picture is pretty small, and I really can't make out much from it. It is however likely that your "specimen" is a piece of man made glass. I have never heard of any emerald from the USA, let alone from anywhere else that was as large as a fist and had that kind of color and transparency. Further more I don't know of any natural mineral from anywhere that would have that color and degree of transparency and still be as large as your fist. Also the specimen appears to be fresh and bright without any of the characteristics of of natural weathering or abrasion that you would expect in something picked up from the soil. You could take the specimen to almost any jeweler and they should be able to give you a good indication of what it is. Failing that I would think that you might show the stone to any of the teachers in the geology departments in colleges and universities in your area and they too could give you an idea of what it is. Perhaps the state even has a state geologist that you could show it to and he could give you an idea of what it was.

Hello,

I agree. Man-made glass.

I agree now, green glass or slag. Thank you all for helping me solve the riddle!

Presence of gas bubbles observed with a magnifying glass should be a good diagnostic test for glass.

Also, a shard of quartz should scratch it if it is glass.

Looks like slag glass to me, or possibly even a furnace glass from a coal plant.

Can't say anything off those pics. Sorry,

Where's it from? Can you work out its specific gravity?

The last one look's like tumble polished jasper-bloodstone maybe.......Steve

I have no idea where or what it is. I am new to this and got a box full or different minerals I think. Just trying to find the type and worth if any

@Steve Federico I looked up the bloodstone and it does look like that, thanks. Is there a website that I can send all the stone to to have the identified?
