Povondraite from
Sterling Hill, Ogdensburg, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA

Locality type:Hill
Classification
Species:Povondraite
Formula:NaFe33+(Mg2Fe43+)(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3O
Comments:EDS can not prove the species of a tourmaline, except perhaps in very rare special cases. No povondraite-like mineral has been been verified by quantitative chemical analyses. The report is certainly in error. However, many specimens were sold as povondraite before the error was discovered. See also FrOg On-line #1998-06 The commonly designated species for the former povondraite is dravite.
