Species: | 'Pyroaurite-2H' (not an IMA approved species) |
Formula: | Mg6Fe23+(OH)16(CO3) · 4H2O |
Comments: | Bronze coloured scaly and slickensided coatings on fracture surfaces in serpentinite. XRF analysis confirms the correct composition for pyroaurite/sjögrenite. Effervescence in acid confirms carbonate. XRD is ambiguous, giving reasonable matches for both minerals, but hampered by their poorly crystalline nature, and consequent poor quality diffraction patterns. Many of the distinguishing reflections for each mineral are missing, and extra ones are present. A mixture of both minerals seems likely, but needs confirmation. (Unpublished work by Dr S. Moreton). |
