Pit Mine
A former Cr occurrence/mine consisting of 2 shafts, a small open pit and a dump containing samples of chromite in serpentine, was found by Pearre and Heyl N-NE of the Choate Mine.
An unnamed chromite prospect along Choat Mine Trail (but not the Choat Mine) in the Soldiers Delight Natural Environment Area, 4 km northeast of Holbrook. Prospect 13 is shown on Plate 40 and Figure 66 as well as described in detail, as it appeared in the late 1950s, on page 757-757 of Pearre and Heyl (1960).
Allen V. Heyl was fond of noting that a hand sample of ore from the Soldiers Delight contained 1 ppm Pt, but never specified which mine it was from. The laurite ? of the present mineral list varies from (Ru, Os, Ir).26S.74 to (Ru,Os,Ni,Ir).27S.73 The apparent problem with the generally accepted formula for laurite is noted in the tables for Smith and Barnes (2102) on platinum group minerals from the Pennsylvania portion of the State Line Chromite District.
Local rocks include rocks of the Wissahickon Formation; Lower Pelitic Schist.
