Honolulu Mineral, Fossil, Gem and Jewelry Show

Last Updated: 11th Nov 2023

By Dan Polhemus

We went to the first ever Honolulu Mineral, Fossil, Gem and Jewelry Show this morning. It is being held at the Hawaii Convention Center, just across the canal from Waikiki, which is a very pleasant venue with a tropical theme.

You know you are in the Pacific, from the general décor to the names on the exhibit halls.

This is the first year that the show has been held. It is being promoted by the same folks who run the Denver Coliseum Show in September each year. As such, it is a small event, but there are still a good mix of dealers offering a variety of things for sale, from mineral specimens to fossils to jewelry.

Some of the offerings at the Shannon booth, including nice wulfenites from southwest Utah (I picked up one of these for my own collection).

Good traffic also at the GeoFossiles booth. People in Hawaii do not see fossils that often and are quite fascinated by them.

The show was a little slow when we first arrived at ten, but by noon there was a steady stream of traffic, and folks were making purchases, since this was a good chance to pick up unique Christmas presents not often seen in the islands. With luck the show will continue in future years.

Dan,
Many thanks for the show report.

Is that a batch of chalcanthite, on the table of Shanon Minerals? From the Planet Mine? A new find, or older material?  Any idea?

14th Nov 2023 17:46 UTCJohn Christian

I saw that too, but had a different question. Is chalcanthite stable in such a humid climate?

Same stuff he had in Denver.

Herwig -

Shannon's chalcanthite specimens were indeed from the Planet Mine, but I do not know when they were collected.

As it turned out, his pallet got flipped by the shipping company on the way to the show, with a lot of spillage and damage, so many of his miniature specimens ended up as thumbnails. It appears insurance will cover the loss, but the result was that he had less on his tables than he had originally intended to display.

In regard to chalcanthite and humidity, the show venue was air conditioned, so no problem there. And recall that chalcanthite, and many other efflorescent minerals, form in old mine shafts under damp conditions, so moisture is not necessarily prejudicial. In fact, some of my Colorado Plateau specimens have the opposite problem, in that they become too dry and then deteriorate over time. But all that said, most collectors in Hawaii keep their more sensitive specimens under some form of climate control.

Hello Dan ,  thank you for the report . It's not very far from the place where I am .
In 2024 , will the date be the same ? were there local collectors with local minerals ? Thank you for your answers .

Eric DeCarlo, Ertashar Pacific Minerals had a booth at the show offering Hawaiian minerals in addition to worldwide minerals. If you are local. you can meet him at the monthly meeting of the Rock and Mineral Society of Hawai'i held every 4th Wednesday of the month. This month's will be held early because of the holidays,  Wednesday Nov. 15.  You can also meet other dealers who have Hawaiian minerals for sale. Information about the Society including membership and meetings can be found here: https://hawaiimineralsociety.pohakugalore.net/

Planet Mine chalcanthite is remarkably stable.   I've had specimens stored in nothing but cardboard for over a decade that have made it through cycles of dry and humid weather without visible change.   I have collected chalcanthite in Utah that did not survive the drive back to Tucson.

Pure copper sulphate (ie. end-member chalcanthite) is fairly stable. But it gets increasingly unstable with increasing Fe content. I suspect that a lot of "unstable chalcanthite" in collections could really be blue Cu-bearing melanterite, the variety called "pisanite".

Last year a friend who has property on the big Island brought me a container of these Fayalite-Forsterite series crystals he picked up on his land there.   This one is 7x5mm in size.   Nice clarity to the material.   A few minerals to be found in Hawaii.

The chalcanthites from the Planet Mine were offered in Tucson in 1996 - yes, I bought a flat!

Interestingly, one can also find pyrite in Hawaii, as seen in this example from the Kapaa Quarry on Oahu. At 22 cm x 16 cm, it is a fairly sizable specimen.
