The Svend Pedersen collection
Last Updated: 27th Jan 2022By The Evje og Hornnes geomuseum, Fennefoss
Svend Pedersen was a Danish geologist at the University of Copenhagen. During his many field trips to the south of Norway, specifically the Setesdal valley, he became a locally wellknown and very much liked person.
Many decades long he brought groups of students to Norway in order to help him with his geological studies of the Setesdal.
He wrote several articles, books and other publications on the geology of the south of Norway, and has contributed greatly to the understanding of the processes that led to the formation of the highly complex geology in this part of Scandinavia.
After he retired, his extensive geological collection at the University of Copenhagen was discarded, but the Evje og Hornnes geomuseum Fennefoss was offered the opportunity to salvage whatever was considered to be of value for the museum.
Thanks to a corporation between the Evje og Hornnes municipality and the Setesdalsmuseet, a car and driver were chartered, and a number of crates were transported back to Norway.
The parts of the collection that were taken back to Norway, comprised both mineralogical and petrological samples of the Setesdal, and other Norwegian localities with an emphasis on ore samples. A limited number of foreign samples was also taken care of.
This article is a stub, and much more will need to be added in order to present a comprehensive picture of the significance of Svend Pedersen and his work as geologist.
