Named after Vladimir Vital'evich Shcherbina (Владимир Витальевич Щербина) (20 November 1907, St. Petersburg, Russian Empire - 20 July 1978, Moscow, USSR), geochemist and mineralogist. He was a student of Alexander Fersman. In 1931, he led a team from the USSR Academy of Sciences in the mineralogical examination of the Lovozero Massif.
