Copper workings on a series of mineralized veins (Black, Robert Raw's, Smithson's, Lowe's, Kneeton, Fairly's and North-West Cross in addition to Merrybent Main) in the Underset Limestone and Nattrass Gill Hazle.
Initial development was by the Merrybent and Middleton Tyas Mining and Smelting Company in about 1856 and the Engine Shaft (for which the grid reference is given) was sunk in 1866 but records of production are poor. There was an attempt to re-open the workings during 1913-1915 but this led to the production of less than 2 tons of copper ore.
