Brennkogel Nordflanke (Goldbergbau), Brennkogel-Gebiet, Fuschertal, Hohe Tauern, Salzburg, Österreich
The Brennkogel forms part of the Hohe Tauern main ridge, that geographically separates Salzburg and Carinthia; minerals reported from the southern slopes of the Brennkogel are listed for Carinthia. The Brennkogel massif mainly consists of serpentinites. At the summit and northwest of it, Ca-rich micaschists and phyllites crop out. A swarm of quartz-carbonate veins disseminating the serpentinites below the summit was worked for gold in the past. Mining ended around 1580 because of severe ice cover. The portals of several adits are still visible on the slopes, but they are inaccessible. The mineralization is largely unknown, since only very few specimens have survived.
