Other/historical names associated with this locality:
London-Range; London-Shamrock; O'Carroll claims; Humphrey property; Reagen property; Curtin shaft; Brick group/claims; Ball Copper Company Mine
A former underground Pb-Cu-Ag-Zn-Au-Mo-Bi-perlite occurrence/mine and group of 132 unpatented claims located in the NW¼ sec. 26, in the NE¼ sec. 27, and in the centeer E½ sec. 28, T4S, R15E, G&SRM, about 1½ miles east of the 79 Mine, 3-4 miles NW of Hayden, on the NW side of Toronado Peak, ½ mile S of Chilito, on federal land. Claims extend into sec. 27. Discovered by Mr. Watson in 1880. Closed 1950. In 1913 the London-Arizona Consolidated Copper Co. merged London-Range, London-Arizona, and the O'Carroll & Ball shafts, and the Curtin (Humphrey) shaft, but some were later split. Other operators included the Toronado Gold Mining Co.; David Hartley; and J.W. Wright. The USGS MRDS database stated accuracy for this locality is 100 meters.
Mineralization is an irregular ore body hosted in limestone and Percha Shale of the Martin Formation. Ore control was the Chocolate fault and the base of the Martin Formation. Ore concentration was the oxidation process. An associated rock unit is Pliocene-Late Devonian rhyodacite. Local rocks include Permian to Pennsylvanian sedimentary rocks.
The London-Arizona ore deposit probably represents the outer peripheral zone of a major ore body with the portions towards the main intrusive contact being eroded away.
Workings include surface and underground openings with a length of 914.4 meters and an overall depth of 99.06 meters and comprised of a 180 foot deep shaft on the London-Range; the 325 foot deep Curtin shaft; and some shallow shafts. Over 1,500 feet of drifts, tunnels, and crosscuts.
Production was some $1,050,000 between 1912 & 1928 (period values).
