Outcrop of red ore layers in greenschists (hence the Italian name “rossa”, i.e. red) that was explored for Cu-Fe ore around 1600 under the direction of the Vertemate family of Piuro (a village at that time under the authority of the Three Leagues, presently part of the Province of Sondrio, Lombardy, Italy). Swiss coordinates 769.5/138.5

Most of the ore is pyrite, but local concentrations of chalcopyrite associated with pyrite occur. Here the sulphide oxidation produced red iron hydroxides (goethite — lepidocrocite) responsible for the red colour. Locally, sphalerite was observed. The matrix is composed of chlorite, muscovite, clinozoisite, albite, with inclusions of apatite and titanite.
