A former Cu-Au-Ag-Pb-Zn occurrence/mine located in sec. 19, T11S, R9W, NMM, 2.4 km (1.5 miles) SE of Lookout Mountain (coordinates of record), on the East flank of the Black Range, S side of Chloride Creek in the Gila National Forest (about 36 miles N65W of Truth or Conseqences), on private (located claim) land in a National Forest area. Discovered and first produced in 1885. One patented claim covers 16.89 acres (mineral survey No. 485), and 5 unpatented claims cover about 70 acres. Owned by the Silver Bar Mining Company, New Mexico (1974). Operated by the Louisiana Land and Exploration Co., 1600 Broadway, Denver, Colorado 80202 (1974). Operated by Ira M. Young, New Mexico (1974). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.

Mineralization is a Pliocene deposit hosted in andesite. The ore body strikes E-W, dips 70N at a thickness of 2.44 meters. The deposits occur as shoots in a vein ranging from 2 to 8 feet wide. 3 shoots exposed in the mine workings pitch steeply to the E. Harley reported surface outcrops indicating at least 3 more shoots. The main mass of the vein consists of brecciated and altered andesite. Controls for ore emplacement included mineralized solutions Rising along a fault zone and localized in fissures. Local alteration includes chloritization, kaolinitization, and propylitized & silicified andesite. Local rocks include andesite and basaltic andesite flows and associated volcaniclastic units.

Workings include underground openings with a length of 1,219.2 meters, and an overall depth of 144.78 meters. Workings reported in 1934 included 1 adit 1,650 feet long, 5 drift levels with about 100 foot vertical separation intervals, 2 vertical shafts about 475 feet deep, extensive stoping and numerous raises.

Production data are found in: Harley, G. T. (1934).

The approximate value of production from 1880 to 1932 was reported to be $415,000 (period values).

Analytical data results: A compilation of assay results gave values ranging from 6 to 54 ounces Ag/ton; 0.01 to 0.5 ounce Au/ton; 1 to 10% Cu. High alumina and Fe content make the crude ore undesirable for use as a flux or dilutent.
Alteration: Chloritized, Kaolinized, Propylitized And Silicified Andesite.

Commodity: General analytical data from nmbmmr general data file.

Deposit: Deposits occur As shoots in a vein ranging from 2 ft. To 8 ft. Wide. Three shoots exposed in the mine workings pitch steeply to the east and g.t. Harley, 1934, reported surface outcrops indicating at least three more shoots. The main mass of the vein consists of brecciated and altered andesite. One patented claim covering 16.89 acres mineral survey number 485 and five unpatented claims covering about 70 acres. Discovery year: 1880's

Development: Louisiana land and exploration began a reconnaissance program in 1974 consisting of mapping, sampling and geochemical surveying.

Geology: For regional geology see black range district.

Ore(s): Mineralized Solutions Rose Along Fault Zone And Localized In Fissures.
