Graf Jost-Christian Zeche, Wolfsberg, Stolberg, Harz, Sachsen-Anhalt, Deutschland
Ancient antimony mine started around 1700.
Located west of Wolfsberg, about 11 km SSW of Harzgerode.
The regular extraction of stibnite in the Graf Jost-Christian Mine started in 1741. Up to when it was shut down in 1864, a total of around 60,000 tons of raw ore were mined.
In the Graf Jost-Christian Mine the rare mineral chalkostibite, a copper antimony sulfide, was first discovered.
In 1849, the Scottish geologist James Nicol (†1879) nicknamed chalcostibite "wolfsbergite" after its place of discovery.
Note: Only the dumps in the area bear witness to the once rich mining tradition. Most of the dumps are located on the property of a sawmill. Today, the main pit is no longer accessible.
