About Paratacamite-(Ni)
Formula:
Cu3(Ni,Cu)(OH)6Cl2
Colour:
Dark green
Lustre:
Vitreous
Hardness:
3
Specific Gravity:
3.70
Crystal System:
Trigonal
Member of:
Name:
Nickel rich analog of paratacamite.
Type Locality:
Dimorph of:
Substituted derivative of paratacamite. The Ni analogue of paratacamite and paratacamite-(Mg). One of two Cu-Ni chloride minerals known. Product of oxidation of pentlandite in saline environment.
Compare droninoite, muonionalustaite; akaganeite and nickelbischofite.
The crystal structure is based on sheets of edge-sharing CuCl2(OH)4 octahedra typically showing Jahn-Teller distortion. Two octahedral sites, M1 and M2, are located between the adjacent sheets and occupied by Cu and Ni. The occupancy of Ni in the M2 site is 71%. respectively. Paratacamite-(Ni) is very close to the upper limit of Ni2+ occupation in the R3 structure.
