Other/historical names associated with this locality:
North Broken Hill Mine; NBH Mine

One of the largest underground Ag-Pb-Zn mines in the field. Currently (2008) redeveloped.
So named as at the northern end of the Broken Hill orebody. First pegged in 1883. The Broken Hill North Silver Mining Company was formed in 1885, and a concentration mill erected in 1888. A new shaft called Number 1 was sunk in 1905, and subsequently removed with open cut mining, and Number 2 shaft sunk in 1933. Operations ceased in 1993.

Description: Bluish green xls, found in the late 1980s; (Fe+Mg)/Mn = 0.54. All other Broken Hill johannsenites analysed were actually Mn-rich hedenbergites. However, no specimen should be simply regarded as being johannsenite because it comes from the North Mine. All specimens should be tested to confirm they are either Mn-rich hedenbergite or johannsenite. Specimens which have not been confirmed, should be considered suspect until tested.
