In the area around Ober-Ostern, baryte was mined from a swarm of SE-trending baryte veins from around 1850 until the second world war. The veins are hosted in gneiss, are up to 500 m long, and carry minor amounts of iron and manganese ores. Along with the deposits at Klein-Umstadt and Ober-Kainsbach, it was one of the economically most important baryte mining districts in the Odenwald range.
