Name(s) in local language(s):
Yxsjögruvan, Yxsjöfältet, Ljusnarsberg, Västmanland, Sverige
Tegengren (1924) mentions Yxsjöberg as a copper-tungsten deposit discovered in the year 1728.
Four claims exist (1924): Norra & Södra Yxsjögruvornas, Kvarnåsgruvan and Dammgruvan; Källgruvan, Bolagsgruvan, Kärrgruvan, Gäddan, Ricco, Åkergruvan, Nävergruvan, Kvarnåsgruvan and Norra Kärrgruvan are as well mentioned in the text (gruva = mine).
Intermittently mined, depending on the copper price.
During WWI, the mines became interesting again due to the tungsten and fluorite grades. A processing plant was quickly built, but already in 1920 the mines closed due to the low market prices.
The mine reopened in 1936 and a new plant was built.
Fluorite concentrate started to be produced in 1956.
Due to falling tungsten prices, the mine closed in 1963 and became water-filled.
AB Statsgruvor bought the property in 1969 and production restarted in 1972.
Output in 1984 was 160,000 tons of fluorspar.
Mining ceased again in the summer of 1989 due to falling W-prices.
Mining was done by sublevel stoping & cut-and-fill mining procedures. Workings are at least 600 meters deep.
