Feruvite was formed by hydrothermal replacement of silicates in a pegmatitic rock.
The island is a wildlife sanctuary.
Interest in the geology of the island is centred on two rare species found here. Neither appears to be specimen grade material, at least described in the sources, and being a conservation area is off limits anyway.
Grandidierite was described by (Black, 1970), at the time only found on Madagascar and Cuvier Island. It is a magnesium aluminium borosilicate. It was found at two locations, both is an aureole surrounding small diorite stocks. At Blanket Bay it was found associated with hypersthene-cordierite-biotite-spessartine-andesine-pyrrhotite, and at Landing Bay with hypersthene-biotite-andesine-orthoclase-quartz-rutile-magnetite.
The island is the type locality of feruvite, and at the time of writing (2018) is found at fourteen locations worldwide on Mindat. It is named after its crystal and chemical similarity to uvite. It is found as a light grey core surrounded by dravite, and overprinted by schorl/dravite, all black-brown members of the tourmaline group. There is no indication of crystal specimens with the material found as grains, aggregating into dark patches at 30% volume of a tourmalised rock. It is associated with quartz, microcline, chlorapatite, and pyrite. It is the iron analog of uvite, and the calcium analog of schorl.
