Closed lead-zinc mine.
Zn-Pb-(Ba-Sr) ore deposit, located in the Tunisian Dome zone, is hosted mainly in the organic matter-rich Albian and Cenomanian–Turonian rocks. The orebodies occur mainly as open-space fillings and are structurally-controlled.
The wash plant El Akhouat processed ore by differential flotation to obtain lead and zinc concentrates. Mining in El Akhouat lasted nearly a century from its discovery in 1892 to the depletion of reserves in 1992. Sterile waste is stored on two settling basins near the processing site.
On 25 June 1896, de la Société la Vieille-Montagne acquired the concession in El Akhouat. Vieille Montagne was active mining from 1898 to 1913. In this period El Akouat contained only calamines with a zinc content of around 24%. In addition to Djebel El Akhouat VM was also active in Ouarsenis, Hammam n'Bail, Nador and Djebba .
The El Akhouat washing plant resumed operations in 1994 by the Djebel Djérissa Company (S.D.D) for the processing of Fej Lahdoum ore. The latter comes from the Fej Lahdoum mine, 25 km from the El Akhouat mine.
The mine has changed hands regularly over time.
