Withnell Central Indee Group

Gold mine. Claimed to be the most significant gold deposit in the region. Epithermal deposit. The Withnell name comes from the family which started the Mallina Station in the 1870's and 1880's.

The Withnell Gold Mine is located just north of the Mallina Shear Zone, within turbiditic sandstone, and shale of the Mallina Formation. The Withnell deposit is east-west striking, south dipping lenses, plunging moderately west.

High grade gold is associated with localised high pyritic planar quartz carbonate veins dipping steeply north. No gold is found in other quartz types at the location, with the exception of one lone ribbon quartz vein on the margin of the high grade zone.

The veins consist of carbonate being dolomite and some ankerite and siderite, and further quartz, sericite and minor chlorite. Carbonate and sericite is also found desseminated in the wall rocks.

Gold is associated with pyrite which makes up 1% volume of the high grade zone, but degreases rapidly away for this zone. Minor arsenopyrite is also present.

Part of the Indee Gold Mine location.
