This historic mine site contained some gold, a lot of water, and to the writer's knowledge no oil. Sometimes gold mines were named after unrelated valuable commodities like gemstones and in this case hydrocarbons.
The mine is just north of the Half Mile Reef locality, about 7 kilometres south-west of Bardoc. The Windanya Consols mine bordered it to the north, the Australasia to the south, and next south the Half Mile Reef mine. The company who owned this last mine took over the lease in 1898 to feed water to its battery.
It is next noted in 1910 being forfeited by Cassin and son. Later that year 83 ounces was obtained from one weeks work by Snowden and 'mate'. In 1939, Kemp and Robinson struck more gold at the lease, obtaining 28 ounces from dirt half filling a kerosene tin, from a shaft 15 feet deep.
The shaft was down to 300 feet, with a small cross cut at the bottom on a highly pyrite mineralised small vein. The mine workings at this point were flooded with water, which largely ended mining at the location. There were several other small shafts on the lease. The mine had produced 105.05 ounces of gold.
